About this book
Frank starts by taking the mystique out of it. Everybody is born with abs. They begin as one column each side of the navel running from ribcage to pelvis, divided by the linea alba, and if you do no abdominal work they stay as columns while fat accumulates between the muscle and the skin.
The distinction he draws is the useful one. Diet and aerobic work keep the fat layer thin, but unless you actually train the abs the horizontal rows never develop, and it is those rows that make the muscles distinct. He has had clients with small waistlines and very little fat who still had no visible abdominal development. Flat, but no six pack.
He is also honest about genetics, which most ab programmes are not. Can everyone have a six pack? No. If you are long waisted you may develop an eight pack. If you are short waisted or have genetically long abdominals you may have to settle for a four.
Then the three aspects of a great waist: keep it small by not stuffing or bloating yourself, stay on a good diet to keep fat off it, and do enough aerobics to stay tight all over.
