Frank Zane Bio
N obody
knows Frank better than me, Christine, his wife of 40 years. At age 64 his
life has been one of continuous achievement. Training with weights for over
50 years, he has won all of bodybuilding’s highest titles, even defeating
Arnold Schwarzenegger for Mr. Universe. You might say he is bodybuilding’s
most highly educated champion. Here are his accomplishments from an early
age to present time:
1959 — At age 17, Frank was awarded Eagle
Scout by the Boy Scouts of America, earned 50 merit badges, and was
inducted into the honor camping society Order of the Arrow. He also served
as archery instructor at Camp Acahela, Blakeslee, Pennsylvania.
1960 — Graduating first in his class at
Edwardsville High School, Frank received a scholarship to Wilkes University
in Wilkes Barre, Pa.
1961 — Placed third in Teen Age Mr. America
competition, winning his first trophy for physique competition at age 18.
1964 — Graduated from Wilkes University with
a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and a minor in chemistry
and mathematics. Three months later he accepted his first teaching
assignment teaching algebra, geometry, and trigonometry at Hamburg High
School in Pa. Here he started the school’s first weight training club and
built a well equipped weight training facility with donations of weights
from local foundries.
1965 — Accepted a position in New Jersey at
Wachung Hills High School teaching mathematics and earth science. That same
year he won over two dozen trophies in bodybuilding competition, including
Mr. North America and Mr. Eastern America.
1966 — Moved to Tampa, Florida in search of
better training conditions where he took a position teaching mathematics and
science at Riviera Jr. High School. It was here that I first met Frank. He
immediately signed me up at Harry Smith’s health studio where he trained.
Under Frank’s guidance I made rapid progress.
1967 — We traveled to New York City where
Frank competed in Mr. America and placed second. I was lucky enough to win
the title of Miss Americana that same evening. We were married a few months
later in December.
1968 — Frank again competed in New York
City, won Mr. America and week later defeated Arnold Schwarzenegger for Mr. Universe in Miami, Florida.
1969 — We moved to Santa Monica, California
where Frank accepted a position teaching mathematics at Mark Twain Jr. High
School in Mar Vista. A few weeks after the school year began he won the
Mr. World competition in Brugge, Belgium.
1970 — Frank won his second Mr. Universe
title, the coveted NABBA Amateur Mr. Universe in London, England. That same
day Arnold Schwarzenegger won Professional Mr. Universe, and I won the Miss
Universe bikini competition.
1971 — We spent the summer doing fitness
seminars and exhibitions throughout South Africa for three months. On the
way back to California he competed in Professional Mr. Universe in London,
placing second to the legendary Bill Pearl.
1972 — Frank won Professional Mr.
Universe in London, England, then competed in his first Mr. Olympia
(world’s highest pro title) two days later in Essen, Germany.
1974 — Enrolled at California State
University, Los Angeles, and competed in his second Mr. Olympia contest in
New York City.
1975 — Filmed for the Movie Pumping Iron
and competed in his third Mr. Olympia in Johannesburg, South Africa.
1976 — Entered his fourth Mr. Olympia
competition in Columbus, Ohio placing 2nd.
1977 — Frank received a Bachelor of
Science degree from California State University, Los Angeles in
psychology and earned a Life Teaching Credential in Secondary
Education specializing in psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics,
astronomy, English, and social studies.
1977 — Frank retired from public school
teaching after 13 years of service and won the Mr. Olympia title for
the first time in Columbus, Ohio.
1978 — Won his second Mr. Olympia
title in Columbus, Ohio and began doing expert commentary at men’s and
women’s bodybuilding contests for CBS television.
1979 — Frank won his third consecutive
Mr. Olympia title in Columbus and did expert bodybuilding commentary for
ABC television. By this time he had conducted bodybuilding and
fitness seminars around the world, making appearances in Japan, Malaysia,
Australia, Africa, Belgium, Holland, France, England, Ireland, Italy,
Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Mexico, all over the United States, Alaska, &
Hawaii.
1979 — Simon & Schuster published our first
book, The Zane Way to a Beautiful Body, went on a 25 city
national book tour resulting in one quarter of a million sales in hardcover
and paperback. The book was translated into Italian, Swedish, French, and
Spanish.
1981 — Simon & Schuster published our second
book, Super Bodies in 12 weeks, resulting in a national media
tour and six figure book sales. Frank appeared in a starring role on Hart
to Hart TV series, “Solid Gold Murder”. He continued doing expert
commentary for NBC television and ESPN and acted in television
commercials.
1985 — Simon & Schuster published our third
book, Zane Nutrition.
1980 to 83 — Frank competed three more times
for Mr. Olympia: Sydney, Australia 1980; London, England 1982; Munich,
Germany 1983, placing 3rd, 2nd, and 4th respectively. At age 41, he retired
from bodybuilding competition after 23 consecutive years. In 1981 Frank and
I opened Zane Haven, a live -in
bodybuilding and fitness learning center in Palm Springs, California.
1992— Frank earned a Master of Arts
Degree from California State University, San Bernardino in Experimental
Psychology.
1922--Was featured in ads for Soloflex
Workout Machine in Esquire, Gentlemen's Quarterly and
Playboy Magazines as well as appearing in the Soloflex Workout Video for
which he designed workout programs.
1992— Invented, patented, and trade marked
the Leg Blaster, Frank’s unique leg training free weight
machine that exercises legs while reducing stress to knees and lower back.
Thousands have been sold directly to the public via mail order.
1992 — Wrote and self published
Fabulously Fit Forever, selling all 10,000 copies by direct mail in
one year. The following year he published and sold 11,000 more copies of
Fabulously Fit Forever Expanded.
1997— Avalon Press published Frank
Zane: Mind Body Spirit—The Personal Training Diaries and
Fabulously Fit Forever Expanded.
1981 to 1998 — We continued operating Zane
Haven in Palm Springs and personally worked with over 3000 people, teaching
them how to achieve their physical goals.
1994— Frank was inducted into Joe
Weider’s Bodybuilding Hall of Fame.
1997— Filmed 95 episodes as host of
Infinite Power Workout, a half hour exercise show which featured Jack
LaLanne, Steve Reeves, Joe Weider, Roland Kickinger, and numerous television
stars as guests. It aired in New York, Chicago, and California markets.
Throughout his career he has made many television appearances, most recently
several episodes on KUSI TV in San Diego.
1998--Featured in Suzanne Sommers Torso
Track infomercial, Ms. Sommers being a client of Frank's exercise program at
the time.
1998 — Moved to San Diego, where Frank and I
operate a fitness mail order business and continue to teach the Zane
Experience program in our private health studio.
1998—Frank began publishing Building
the Body Quarterly Magazine, free of paid advertising, devoted to
creating the proportionate, defined, symmetrical physique. Thirty five
issues have been published and subscriptions continue to increase. In
addition, he has written hundreds of articles on bodybuilding, nutrition,
and motivation for Magazines: Muscle & Fitness, Flex, Men's Fitness,
Muscle Mag International, Reps, Iron Man, and continues to contribute to
On Fitness Magazine.
2002— Filmed and began marketing his workout
DVD, Train with Zane.
2004 — Frank was honored with the Arnold
Schwarzenegger Lifetime Achievement Award at the Arnold Classic in
Columbus, Ohio.
2005 — Became a member of the World Gym
Hall of Fame at Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio. A few months later he
was hired as consultant and acted in the A & E television movie See
Arnold Run. The movie licensed one of his original songs.
2005 — Inducted into the Muscle Beach
Hall of Fame at Venice Beach, California. To celebrate the occasion he
wrote and performed his song “Muscle Beach” before thousands of
people.
2006 — An accomplished songwriter and
musician playing guitar, harmonica, and flute, he performed songs he had
written at Sri Chinmoy’s Harmony Concert at Cox Arena in San Diego before
10,000 people, “Lifting Up the World with Oneness Heart”. Every year
at the Hyatt Capital Square Hotel, Columbus, Ohio, Frank and his band
INZANE perform his original songs. He has recorded and markets dozens of
peak performance and deep relaxation CDs.
2006 — Frank published his seventh book
The Zane Body Training Manual. Earlier that year he placed first
in an online poll of Iron Man and Flex Magazine
readers, getting the most votes for “Whose physique would you like to have
24/7?” His votes outnumbered Schwarzenegger, Steve Reeves (Hercules), and
the current Mr. Olympia. Frank is the leanest winner of bodybuilding’s
highest title Mr. Olympia which is why so many aspire to look like him. He
is a role model for the aging American male.
2007 — Frank continues to make personal
appearances across the United States, teaching fitness to thousands of men
and women of all ages. He has led seminars at Learning Annex San
Diego and Los Angeles, and corporate fitness seminars for
organizations such as Michigan Employees Retirement System and employees of
Results Radio, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. With the best developed body of
anyone 64 years of age and his many achievements, education, and experience,
